Philadelphia International Airport Code

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is the primary airport serving the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Located in Tinicum Township, Pennsylvania, it is the largest airport in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and serves as a major hub for American Airlines and its regional subsidiary American Eagle. The airport has seen a significant increase in passenger numbers since its opening in 1940, when it was known as Philadelphia Municipal Airport.

In 1954, Philadelphia Municipal Airport was renamed Philadelphia International Airport to reflect its growing importance as a major international air transportation hub. In 1971, the airport underwent a major renovation project which included the construction of two new runways and the expansion of passenger facilities to accommodate larger aircraft and greater numbers of travelers. This project also saw the introduction of automated baggage handling systems, which have since become standard at airports worldwide. As part of this renovation project, PHL adopted an innovative new system for ground transportation which allowed passengers to be shuttled from their cars to their gates via automated vehicles called “people movers”.

By 1980, PHL had become one of America’s busiest airports with over 16 million passengers flying through each year. The airport underwent another major renovation project in 1992 which included the construction of a new terminal building designed by renowned architect Cesar Pelli and an additional runway to accommodate increased traffic flow. In 2003, PHL opened a consolidated rental car facility located on-site with easy access by both ground transportation and public transit options such as SEPTA’s regional rail line connecting downtown Philadelphia with Center City and other neighborhoods throughout the city.
