Jacksonville International Airport (JIA) opened in 1968 and was the first international airport built in the state of Florida. It was created as a response to the growing need for air travel in and out of the Jacksonville area. JIA was originally known as Imeson Airport, named after the local Imeson family who donated part of their land to help create it. The airport quickly became popular, serving more than two million passengers per year by 1972. In 1977, it was renamed Jacksonville International Airport and expanded to accommodate larger aircrafts. Since then, JIA has grown and modernized significantly. In 2007, it underwent a major renovation project which included a full interior remodel and the addition of many new shops, restaurants and services. The airport now serves more than six million passengers each year and continues to undergo improvements to make travelling through JIA easier and more enjoyable for everyone.
