Kahului Airport is located on the island of Maui in Hawaii and is the second busiest airport in the state. It was originally opened in 1930 as a dirt strip for small aircraft and was known as Maui Airport. The first commercial flight, a Pan American Airways Sikorsky S-42, landed at Kahului Airport in 1931. In 1937, a new terminal building was constructed, and it was also around this time that the airport received its current name, Kahului Airport.

Over the following decades, Kahului Airport underwent several major upgrades to increase capacity and improve amenities. In 1965, a new runway was built to handle larger aircrafts. In 1981, an air traffic control tower was erected and the main terminal underwent renovation to improve safety standards. The airport also began offering international flights in 1984 when Hawaiian Airlines started flying to Tokyo. By 2000, Kahului had become one of the busiest airports in Hawaii and had served more than 3 million passengers that year alone. Since then improvements have continued with additional gates added and expansion of existing facilities. The airport is about 5 kilometers east of the city. Motorists coming from abroad, either take the Kuihelani Highway, the Mokulele Highway or the Hana Highway to Kahului and be then outside the city on the signs that lead to the airport.,
