Kalispell – Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) is located seven miles east of downtown Kalispell, Montana. The airport was initially established as a military base in 1942, during World War II. It was originally known as the Flathead County Airport and was used to train pilots for the war effort. After the war, it was turned over to the county and renamed Kalispell – Glacier Park International Airport in 1954.

In 1957, the airport began offering commercial air service with Northwest Airlines providing flights to Spokane and Salt Lake City. In 1961, a new terminal building opened to accommodate the increasing number of passengers and airlines serving the airport. In addition to Northwest Airlines, North Central Airlines (later Republic Airlines) began serving FCA in 1967 with flights to Seattle and Minneapolis/St. Paul.

The 1970s saw an expansion of services at FCA with additional airlines providing service including United Airlines, Air Wisconsin, Horizon Air, Big Sky Airlines and Allegheny Commuter (later USAir Express). In 1983, an expansion project began that included improvements such as a new runway and modernized terminal building that had more gates and space for passengers. The project also included construction of a new parking lot that is still in use today.

In 1996 another major expansion project took place at FCA which included construction of a new control tower, additional aircraft parking spaces on the tarmac and runway improvements. The airport also began offering international service with direct flights to Calgary beginning in 1997 through Northwestern Air Lease Ltd., which has since become part of Canadian North Inc. In 2003, an automated weather observation system was installed at FCA which displays real-time weather information on monitors throughout the terminal building and on its website for pilots’ reference before takeoff or landing.

Location
The airport is located approx. 6 kilometers below the town of Columbia Falls and approx. 14 kilometers north of Kalispell. Drivers traveling from outside the city should take US Highway 93 or US Highway 2 to either Kalispell or Columbia Falls and then continue on US Highway 2 to the airport.

Passengers arriving by train take the “Empire Builder” to Whitefish Amtrak Station and then either a taxi or a limo to the airport, which is around 18 kilometers away.
