Lynchburg Regional Airport Code

The Lynchburg Regional Airport was established in the early 1930s to serve the Lynchburg area. It was originally known as Preston-Glenn Field, named after two prominent members of the area’s aviation community, Preston Glenn and his son, John Glenn. The airport began as a grassy airstrip and was used for recreational purposes. In 1941, the United States Army Air Corps took control of the airport and used it for military training during World War II. After the war, it was returned to civilian control and renamed Lynchburg Regional Airport.

In the late 1950s, commercial flights began operating from Lynchburg Regional Airport with service to Richmond and Norfolk. In 1964, a new terminal building was constructed at the airport which included a restaurant and lounge for passengers waiting for their flights. The terminal also featured an observation deck where visitors could watch planes take off and land from inside or outside of the building. Throughout its history, Lynchburg Regional Airport has grown significantly in size with the construction of additional runways, taxiways, hangers, and hangars to accommodate larger aircrafts such as jets. The airport also has an FAA Flight Service Station that provides weather briefings and other important services to pilots flying in or out of Lynchburg.
