Madison-Dane County Regional Airport (MSN) has been a major transportation hub for the region since it first opened in 1925. Originally, the airport was a grassy airfield with two dirt runways and a hangar that served as an airplane parts store. Over the years, MSN has seen many improvements and expansions. In 1933, the airport was paved and lights were installed for night flights. In 1940, an art deco-style terminal building was built to accommodate larger passenger numbers. The 1950s saw further upgrades to the runway system and expansion of the terminal building. In 1963, a new control tower was constructed to manage air traffic.

The 1970s ushered in a period of significant growth for MSN as more airlines began offering service to Madison-Dane County Regional Airport and passenger numbers continued to rise steadily each year. In 1975, the airport opened its first jetway system allowing passengers direct access from their plane onto the terminal building without having to walk outside on the tarmac or use stairs like before. The airport is located 8 kilometers northeast of downtown Madison. The best way to get to the airport for drivers coming from outside of the city is Interstate 90. Take I-90 to Exit # 138b and then continue on Highway 30 to the turnoff to Highway 113, which leads directly to the airport. Metro Transit
