What is COO?
COO is the English acronym for Chief Operating Officer, a position assigned to who is the right hand of the CEO (Chief Executive Officer or President) within an organization.
The COO is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the company, conducting a routine and efficient follow-up of the business, and with the additional function of regularly reporting all operations of the company to the Executive Director.
An example of someone with this position is Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, who in 2008 joined the team and became responsible for transforming the social network into a profitable business. The CEO of Facebook is Mark Zuckerberg.
In general, the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) is the chief executive of large organizations, responsible for business strategy and management at an advanced level. As it is not very involved in the day-to-day business, it limits this function to the COO.
In business communication, the presence of acronyms to designate functions (usually beginning with the letter “C” of ” Chief ” or “Director”) is very frequent. Here are some examples:
CCO (Chief Communications Officer) – Communications Directors
CFO (Chief Financial Officer) – Chief Financial Officers
CHRO (Chief Human Resources Officer) – Human Resources Directors
CIO (Chief Information Officer) or CTO (Chief Technology Officer) – Technology Directors
CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) – Marketing Directors
