Palm Beach International Airport Abbreviation Code

Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) is located in the city of West Palm Beach, Florida. It was originally known as the Palm Beach Municipal Airport, and it was built in 1936 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The airport was designed to accommodate small aircrafts such as private planes and commercial airliners. In 1950, the airport was renamed as Palm Beach International Airport.

In the late 1950s, PBI underwent a major expansion project that included a new terminal building and three new runways. This allowed for larger aircrafts to use the airport and increased its capacity for passenger traffic. The first commercial airline to fly out of PBI was Eastern Airlines in 1956. Since then, many other airlines have operated from PBI including Delta, United, American Airlines, JetBlue Airways, and Southwest Airlines.

Since its expansion in the 1950s, PBI has continued to grow and develop over time. In 1973 a new state-of-the-art international arrivals facility opened which allowed for faster processing times for international travelers entering the US through PBI Airport. In 2004 a new air traffic control tower was built which replaced an older tower that had been in place since 1958. In 2017 a $200 million renovation project began which included upgrades to many of the terminals and concourses at PBI Airport as well as improvements to parking areas and other amenities such as restaurants and shops.
