Pittsburgh International Airport Code

The history of Pittsburgh International Airport began in the early 1900s, when the Allegheny County government began considering a site for a new airport. In 1935, ground was broken on the site of what is today Pittsburgh International Airport. Construction was completed in 1938 and the airport opened with only one runway. The airport experienced steady growth throughout the 1940s and 1950s, adding more runways and expanding its capacity to accommodate larger aircraft. By 1965, the airport had become one of the busiest airports in the country, handling nearly 10 million passengers annually.

In 1992, US Airways began construction on a new terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport. This terminal would become known as Concourse C and it opened in 1993 to much fanfare. The new terminal featured an automated baggage system that allowed passengers to check their bags without having to wait in line at ticket counters. Additionally, Concourse C offered more amenities than other terminals at Pittsburgh International Airport, including shops and restaurants that were open 24 hours a day. Since then, several other expansions have been made to the airport’s terminals and runways, including a new international concourse that opened in 2003 and additional gates that opened in 2013. These updates have made Pittsburgh International Airport one of the most modern airports in North America and it continues to be an important hub for air travel today.
