The Portland International Jetport was established in the late 1920s, with the first flights from the airport taking place in 1929. The original facility consisted of just a single grass runway and a small hangar. In 1940, the Civil Aeronautics Administration approved funds for the construction of a new passenger terminal and control tower. The airport officially opened its new facilities in 1941, becoming one of Maine’s first commercial airports. This new facility was much larger than its predecessor, featuring two runways and an expanded terminal building. Over the years, more improvements were made to the airport, such as additional runways and taxiways, a new parking garage, and a number of other amenities.
By the 1950s, Portland International Jetport had become one of Maine’s busiest airports with numerous domestic and international flights arriving and departing daily. In 1953, an Air Force base was established at the airport to serve as an alternate landing site for military aircraft in case of emergency or bad weather. This addition further increased air traffic at the Jetport and helped to solidify its position as an important regional hub for air travel in New England. Throughout its history, Portland International Jetport has continued to be upgraded to meet modern demands for air travel safety and convenience. Recent additions have included improved security systems, updated terminals with modern amenities including shops and restaurants, jet bridges for boarding planes directly from within terminals rather than requiring passengers to board via stairs or ramps on tarmacs outside terminals, additional runways for larger planes such as international wide-body jets that require longer runways than those available at smaller airports such as those found throughout Maine’s rural areas.
