Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) was first opened in 1911, when the first commercial flight in Utah took off from the Salt Lake Valley. The airport was originally called Woodward Field, named after a local businessman and rancher who donated the land for the airport. During World War I, the U.S. Army Air Corps took over the airport for military use and renamed it Willey Field. After the war ended in 1918, commercial flights resumed at Willey Field until 1927 when it was replaced by Salt Lake Municipal Airport. The new municipal airport was built on land donated by LDS Church President Heber J. Grant and was located closer to downtown Salt Lake City than its predecessor, making it more convenient for travelers.
In 1931, Salt Lake Municipal Airport became Salt Lake City Municipal Airport as part of a nationwide effort to standardize airport names across the country. The following year, United Airlines began operating out of SLC and continued to do so until 1963 when they moved their operations to what is now known as Utah’s second international airport: Provo Municipal Airport (now known as Provo International Airport). During this same period of time, SLC saw an increase in air traffic due to its proximity to nearby ski resorts and national parks that were becoming popular tourist destinations during this era. In addition to United Airlines, other major airlines began operating out of SLC such as Pan American World Airways in 1936 and Trans World Airlines in 1937 which helped further increase air traffic at SLC throughout the 1940s and 1950s.
