Sioux Falls Regional Airport, formerly known as Joe Foss Field, has been in operation since 1928. It was originally built as a grass airfield and served as an auxiliary airfield for the Sioux Falls Army Air Base during World War II. After the war, it was used primarily for private and business aviation until the 1960s when commercial flights began to be offered. By the 1970s, Sioux Falls Regional Airport had become a hub for regional airline service with three major airlines offering service to Chicago, Denver, Minneapolis and other Midwest cities.
