What is Giving?

The verb donate comes from the Latin word dare. The term is used in various ways according to context.

The first meanings mentioned by the Royal Spanish Academy in its dictionary allude to donate (voluntarily give in, give) and to deliver (make something happen to another person). For example: “I’m going to give you a book I inherited from my father”“We always have to give our help to those who need it”“Please, you have to give me another chance”.

What is Giving?

Granting, conferring and granting are other actions that can be mentioned as giving: “I’m going to give Gomez a break, I feel like he’s not performing at his best”, “The rumors point that the president is going to give the position of minister of finance to his brother-in-law”, “I’m not going to give my ex-partner a break until he complies with the agreement”.

Giving, on the other hand, can be the act of producing or generating: “In the summer, this plant will give many flowers”“My brother believes that the rent of the family home can give us a good rent”“The cow, when it grows, will give you a lot of milk”.

Give or receive a class or lesson (“The writer was hired to give a lecture at the municipal cultural center”),carry out an action (“When the news broke, the child began to jump”), apply a blow (““If you don’t retract, I’ll give you a punch!”), hand out cards (“It’s your turn to give you”),communicate the condolences (“ smear something (“Tomorrow I’m going to give another hand of paint to the door”)and start the mechanism that allows electricity, water or gas to circulate (“I’m done with the wires, now I’m going to give the electricity again”) are other notions of giving.

Broadly speaking, we can say that the verb give always denotes an action with a certain degree of «movement» from one point to another, whether a physical or symbolic question. In the case of a gift that someone gives to another person, the verb gives us a gesture that has a generally profound meaning, to celebrate an event or congratulate her on an achievement; however, it is still the transfer of a good, which changes ownership when purchased, and then when delivered to the recipient.

The activity of giving a massage, on the other hand, consists in the application of a series of techniques to manipulate the muscle layers of the body, both superficial and deep, with the aim of improving the functions of the body, collaborating with recovery processes, reducing reflex muscle activity and promoting general well-being through relaxation.

In this case, we can say that massage is a service that one person provides to another, an activity that involves an exchange of energy in both directions, but especially that of the individual who receives it. In other words, the masseur applies a treatment to the patient that causes positive results that will remain in him, and that is why we can say that he “gives it”.

In a more symbolic sense, giving our support to someone also makes sense as soon as the other person receives a series of advice and the possibility of venting their sorrows, an opportunity that causes them a change, that leaves him something new in his emotional system.

The expression take a walk may seem very different from all the previous ones at first, since there is no clear receiver of the “walk”; However, if we think that the activity aims to give our body a treatment to strengthen it, promote circulation and breathe fresh air, the use of the verb dar seems quite appropriate.
