The Florence Regional Airport was first established in 1934 as a small, single-runway airport. It was initially used for public transportation and commercial flights. In 1951, the airport underwent its first major expansion, adding an additional runway and a new terminal building. This allowed the airport to accommodate more flights and larger aircraft. By the late 1950s, the airport had become an important hub for commercial aviation in the region, with direct flights to major cities throughout South Carolina and other states in the Southeast. The 1960s saw further expansion of facilities at Florence Regional Airport as it became one of the busiest airports in South Carolina. The number of passengers flying into and out of Florence Regional Airport increased dramatically over this period, with some estimates putting annual passenger numbers at over 500,000 by 1965. The airport also underwent further renovations during this period, including a new control tower that was completed in 1966. In addition to its growing passenger numbers, Florence Regional Airport also began serving cargo airlines around this time as well.
