The Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (CHA) opened in 1930, and was initially called Lovell Field. The airport was built to serve the needs of the growing city of Chattanooga, Tennessee and the surrounding area. The airport was named after World War I Army pilot and aviation pioneer, Lieutenant Paul W. Lovell. In 1940, the airport underwent major renovations and expansion, as it became a training base for the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, Lovell Field returned to its civilian roots as a commercial airport for passengers and cargo flights.
In 1962, Lovell Field was renamed Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (CHA) in honor of its long-standing service to the community. Since then, CHA has grown significantly in size and scope, with more than 500 flights per week serving destinations across North America. The airport also serves as a hub for freight carriers such as FedEx Express and UPS Airlines. In addition to air travel services, CHA is home to several businesses including an aviation museum dedicated to preserving local history through exhibits on aviation pioneers from Chattanooga. CHA also offers ground transportation options including rental cars, taxi services, shuttles, buses, limousines and more.
