Flint-Bishop International Airport was first established in the early 1940s as Bishop International Airport. It was built on a 500-acre site, located three miles west of the City of Flint, Michigan. It was constructed to provide an airfield for military training and commercial flights. The original terminal building included two large hangars, a control tower, and two runways. During World War II, the airport served as a training base for the United States Army Air Force and was one of the busiest airports in Michigan at that time.
In 1947, Bishop International Airport became Flint-Bishop International Airport after it was purchased by the City of Flint from its original owners. This allowed for further growth and expansion of operations at the airport. In 1953, new construction began to accommodate more flights and larger aircrafts. The two runways were extended to accommodate larger planes and a new terminal building with four gates was added along with additional hangars to house private aircrafts owned by local businesses.
In ensuing decades, Flint-Bishop International Airport continued to expand its operations by adding more gates in 1965 and 1975 respectively which helped accommodate more passengers and larger aircrafts such as Boeing 727s and McDonnell Douglas DC-10s during that time period. In 1977, an automated flight information display system (FIDS) was installed in order for passengers to be informed about their flight status before boarding their plane which demonstrated that Flint-Bishop had now joined other major airports around the world in terms of technological advances concerning passenger convenience at an airport facility.
