Grand Island-Central Nebraska Regional Airport (GICNRA) has been a vital part of the Central Nebraska region since it was established in 1929. The airport was originally owned by the City of Grand Island and was used as an agricultural and recreational facility. It provided a convenient way for local farmers to transport their goods to market, as well as a way for people to travel around the region.

In the 1950s, GICNRA began to expand its services, offering commercial flights to nearby cities. In the 1960s, it became a major hub for air cargo operations in the Midwest. The airport experienced rapid growth during this time with new buildings being constructed and new services being added. The 1980s saw further expansion at GICNRA with more facilities being built, including a new terminal building and a control tower that allowed for better air traffic control operations. The 1990s saw further improvements such as upgraded runways and taxiways, improved lighting systems, and additional hangars for aircraft storage.
