Jackson-Evers International Airport is located in Jackson, Mississippi, and is the largest airport in the state. It was opened in 1963 and has been an important part of Mississippi’s economy ever since. The airport was first named Hawkins Field after Walter S. Hawkins, Jr., a local pilot who served as a World War II fighter pilot and instructor. In 1969, the name was changed to Jackson-Evers International Airport to honor Medgar Evers, a civil rights leader who was assassinated in 1963. The airport, which opened in 1963, is approximately 3 miles east of Jackson Downtown. The best way to get to the airport if you are driving north is Interstate 55. Take I-55 towards Jackson to Exit # 98 and then continue on State Road 25 (Lakeland Drive), which is the rest of the way is signposted. The fastest way to get to the airport for drivers coming from the south is Interstate 20. Take this to Exit # 52 and then follow the signs to the airport parking lots.
