Lanai Airport Code

Lanai Airport is a state-owned, public-use airport located on the Hawaiian island of Lanai. It is located three nautical miles south of the central business district of Lanai City. The airport was originally established by Pan American Airways in 1935 and served as an emergency landing field for Pan Am’s transpacific flights. In the 1940s, it was used as a military airfield by the U.S. Army Air Corps and later by the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, it was taken over by Island Air Service, which operated scheduled passenger service to Honolulu and Maui until 1957 when Island Air ceased operations due to financial difficulties.

The airport remained dormant until 1972 when Pacific Airways began operating regular passenger service to Honolulu using small aircraft such as Cessna 207s and de Havilland Twin Otters. Pacific Airways continued to serve Lanai Airport until its closure in 1979 due to increasing competition from larger airlines operating out of Maui’s Kahului Airport (OGG). In 1984, Lanai Airport was reopened with regularly scheduled service provided by Aloha Airlines, which operated daily flights between Honolulu and Lanai City using Boeing 737 aircraft until 2008 when Aloha ceased all operations due to bankruptcy filing.

Today, Lanai Airport is served by Mokulele Airlines with daily flights between Honolulu and Lanai City using Cessna Grand Caravans and Beechcraft 1900Cs aircraft. Additionally, Island Air provides charter services from Lanai Airport utilizing Cessna 208B Grand Caravan aircraft for both interisland travel as well as private charters within Hawaii’s outer islands or even continental US destinations such as Las Vegas or Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The airport also receives occasional military traffic from Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH) located at Kaneohe Bay on Oahu’s windward coast.
