Sitka – Rocky Gutierrez Airport was first established in 1940 as a military base for the US Navy. The base was used for training, reconnaissance, and anti-submarine operations during World War II. In 1945, the US Navy decommissioned the facility and it was transferred to the City of Sitka in 1948. The airport was initially known as Sitka Municipal Airport before being renamed to honor local aviator Rocky Gutierrez in 1959.
The airport underwent several renovations over the years to accommodate larger commercial aircraft and improve safety measures. In 1972, the runway was extended from 4,000 feet to 5,000 feet to allow larger planes access to the airport. This expansion allowed for increased passenger traffic and improved cargo capabilities. In addition, safety features such as an Instrument Landing System (ILS) were added in 1975 to ensure smoother landings during inclement weather conditions. By 1990, the airport had become a major hub for air travel within Alaska with more than 60 daily flights arriving and departing from various destinations. Today, Sitka – Rocky Gutierrez Airport is home to several airlines offering direct flights throughout Alaska and beyond including United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, PenAir, Ravn Alaska and Boutique Air among others.
